Aquaculture Development Program

Freshwater and marine species programs designed for Florida conditions, regulatory compliance and integration with WWF's controlled-environment and land-based production systems.

Development status: Aquaculture species, system designs and compliance pathways described on this page represent the planned program. No species is currently in production at WWF. When production begins, each species listing will carry a dated status label tied to real operating data.

Program Logic

The aquaculture program is structured around two questions: what species can thrive in Florida conditions with the infrastructure WWF can build, and what markets exist for live and processed aquatic products in Central Florida?

Species selection prioritizes organisms that tolerate Florida's warm-water temperatures, integrate with recirculating aquaponics systems, serve identifiable market channels (food fish, live bait, biological pest control, ornamental) and comply with Florida fish and wildlife regulations without conditional or restricted permits.

Each species enters the program through a trial phase: small-cohort culture in controlled conditions, mortality tracking, growth-rate measurement, feed-conversion documentation and market-channel validation. Species that clear trial criteria move to production scale. Species that fail are documented and removed.

Freshwater Program

Five freshwater species form the core aquaculture program, each selected for Florida suitability, market demand and system integration potential.

Aquaponics nutrient engine & food fish

Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.)

Warm-water species ideally suited to Florida recirculating systems. High feed-conversion efficiency. Primary nutrient source for aquaponic plant production. Marketable as whole fish, fillets and live fish. Florida-legal species with established aquaculture protocols.

Sport fish & pond stocking

Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus)

Native Florida species. Pond culture for sport-fishing stocking sales and direct food-fish markets. Compatible with forage-fish co-culture. Florida native species status simplifies permitting. Popular with recreational fishing customers.

Live bait & forage supply

Forage Fish (Fathead Minnows & Golden Shiners)

High-volume, fast-reproducing species for the live-bait market. Fathead minnows and golden shiners are Florida-legal, widely demanded by bait shops and recreational anglers. Also serve as forage for crappie and other predator species in on-farm pond systems.

Biological vector control

Mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.)

Native Florida species used by mosquito-control districts for biological larvicide in retention ponds, ditches and wetland areas. Institutional buyers (counties, water management districts) provide stable demand. Low-input culture with high reproductive rates.

Premium food product

Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)

Warm-season culture species with strong market demand. Grown in ponds or tank systems during Florida’s warm months. Premium pricing for live and fresh product. Requires seasonal production planning and temperature management during shoulder seasons.

Marine & Brackish Program

Marine and brackish-water species for the live-bait and specialty aquaculture markets. These programs require saltwater or brackish infrastructure and separate biosecurity protocols.

Live Shrimp

Saltwater live-bait shrimp for the recreational fishing market. High demand in coastal Florida. Requires biosecure saltwater recirculating systems. Premium pricing for live delivery to bait shops and marinas.

Mud Minnows (Fundulus spp.)

Hardy brackish-water bait fish popular with inshore anglers. Tolerant of wide salinity and temperature ranges. Low-maintenance culture species with consistent bait-shop demand throughout the year.

Fiddler Crabs

Live bait and ecological specimens for the inshore fishing and aquarium markets. Brackish-water culture with simple containment requirements. Seasonal demand peaks during sheepshead and permit fishing seasons.

Marine Worms (Polychaetes)

Bloodworms and sandworms for the saltwater fishing bait market. High-value live-bait product with strong demand from tackle shops and charter operations. Culture protocols under development for Florida conditions.

Florida Compliance

All aquaculture operations at WWF will comply with Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) aquaculture licensing, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) species regulations and applicable water management district permits.

FDACS Aquaculture

FDACS regulates aquaculture facilities, issues aquaculture certificates of registration, and administers best management practices for Florida aquaculture operations.

FWC Regulations

FWC regulates species possession, transport and release. Non-native species require conditional species permits. Native species culture must comply with harvest and stocking regulations.

Evidence Standard

Every aquaculture species claim published by WWF will carry an evidence label identifying whether the data comes from peer-reviewed literature, FDACS/UF-IFAS extension publications, founder prior experience, modeled projections or current WWF operating data. No production metric will be published without its source classification.

When WWF aquaculture systems are operational, published data will include stocking densities, feed-conversion ratios, mortality rates, growth curves, water-quality parameters and per-unit production costs — all tied to dated production records.
