Controlled Environment Agriculture

Indoor and climate-controlled production systems designed for year-round output, weather independence and measurable operating discipline.

Evidence boundary: Founder observations from prior growing experience are clearly labeled as such. They are not WWF farm data. When WWF controlled-environment systems are operational, published metrics will be tied to dated production records from the actual facility.

Why Indoors

Florida's climate delivers heat, humidity, intense UV, hurricane-force winds and unpredictable freeze events. Controlled-environment agriculture removes weather from the production equation. Indoor systems maintain precise temperature, humidity, airflow and lighting regardless of what happens outside the walls.

The trade-off is energy cost. Every BTU of cooling, every photon of LED light and every cubic foot of dehumidified air has an operating cost that field production avoids. CEA earns its place when the crops it produces cannot be reliably grown outdoors in Florida, when the production cycle is short enough to generate rapid revenue, or when product quality requirements (cleanliness, consistency, shelf life) exceed what field production can deliver.

Four Indoor Enterprises

Each enterprise is designed to operate independently while sharing infrastructure, utilities and labor with the others.

Enterprise 1

Microgreens

Vertical rack systems with full-spectrum LED arrays in a climate-controlled production room (~20 x 25 ft). Seeds are sown on sterile coconut coir pads, irrigated with clean water and harvested at 7 to 14 days when nutrient density peaks. No soil, no synthetic fertilizers, no pesticides.

Varieties include sunflower, pea shoot, radish, broccoli, wheatgrass, amaranth, cilantro and rotating specialty mixes. Each variety has a documented grow protocol specifying seed density, watering schedule, light cycle, temperature range and expected harvest window.

Enterprise 2

Gourmet Mushrooms

Humidity- and temperature-controlled fruiting chamber (~20 x 25 ft) with HEPA-filtered fresh-air exchange. Substrate prepared from pasteurized agricultural byproducts (hardwood sawdust, straw, supplemented with wheat bran or soy hull). Inoculated with commercial spawn in a clean-room workflow.

Species include oyster mushrooms (pearl, blue, pink, golden, king), lion's mane, shiitake and rotating specialty varieties. Each species has documented fruiting parameters: temperature range, relative humidity, CO2 tolerance, fresh-air exchange rate and expected flush timing.

Enterprise 3

Diversified Aquaponics

Recirculating aquaponics integrates fish culture with soilless plant production. Fish waste provides nitrogen and micronutrients; plants and biofilter bacteria clean the water for return to fish tanks. The system runs as a closed loop with minimal water loss (primarily evapotranspiration and plant uptake).

Plant production spans leafy greens (lettuce, kale, chard, spinach), herbs (basil, cilantro, mint, dill), fruiting crops (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers in media beds) and specialty items (edible flowers, watercress, nasturtium). Fish species: tilapia as the primary nutrient engine, with channel catfish and ornamental species under evaluation.

Enterprise 4

Vermiculture

Continuous flow-through worm bins process farm organic waste — spent mushroom substrate, microgreen root mats, produce trimmings and cardboard packaging — into vermicompost and worm castings. Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) and European nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis) are the primary species.

Products: bagged worm castings for retail garden customers, bulk castings for landscapers and nurseries, live worms for vermicomposting and fishing bait, and vermicompost tea concentrate. Vermiculture closes the organic-waste loop on the farm while generating a standalone revenue stream.

Aquaponics Crop Diversity

The aquaponics system is designed for crop diversity, not monoculture. Planned production spans these categories:

Leafy Greens

Lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, arugula, bok choy, collards, mustard greens

Herbs

Basil, cilantro, mint, dill, parsley, chives, oregano, thyme

Fruiting Crops

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries (media-bed culture)

Specialty

Edible flowers, watercress, nasturtium, microgreen floats

Root Zone

Green onions, radishes (media-bed compatible varieties)

Experimental

Seasonal trials based on market demand and system performance data

Operating Discipline

Controlled-environment agriculture is only as good as its operating discipline. Equipment alone does not produce consistent results — documented protocols, daily monitoring, batch tracking and honest yield reporting do. WWF's CEA operations will follow these principles:

Documented Protocols

Every crop variety, mushroom species and fish cohort has a written production protocol specifying inputs, environmental targets, timeline and expected output. Protocols are versioned and updated based on operating data.

Batch Tracking

Every production run is assigned a batch identifier linking seed/spawn lot, sow/inoculation date, environmental conditions, harvest date, yield weight and quality grade. Batch data feeds operating dashboards and published intelligence.

Daily Monitoring

Temperature, humidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity and light levels are logged daily (automated where possible, manual where not). Deviations from protocol trigger documented corrective actions.

Honest Reporting

Failed batches, contamination events, equipment failures and below-target yields are documented and published alongside successes. The knowledge platform earns trust by reporting reality, not curated highlights.
